CDC flu documents are available for download and/or ordering in 12 languages common among refugees including: Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Dzongkha, English, Farsi, Karen, Kirundi, Nepali, Oromo, Somali, and Spanish.

"American Heart": DVD Release

American Heart DVD is now available! It's official! The American Heart DVD has been released and is now available for purchase on our website. A lot of people have been eagerly awaiting this occasion, but we think you'll agree it was worth the wait -- the DVD looks great and includes some cool extra features including lots of "deleted scenes" -- scenes that we really liked but sadly ended up on the cutting room floor. what's this? Last week, we were thrilled to learn American Heart was honored with the Bronze Jury Prize at the Social Justice Film Festival in Seattle. Here's what they had to say about our film: "American Heart packs an emotional wallop as it portrays the lasting legacy of commitment, caring, and hope that the clinic provides.” Among the upcoming engagements for American Heart is the State Department's 9th Annual Refugee Admissions Workshop, hosted by the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. American Heart will be shown twice during the workshop which takes place the week of December 2-6. Screenings are open to workshop participants, and panel will be moderated by our very own Dr. William Stauffer.    From the nation's capital we head to Milwaukee! American Heart will be presented as part of the Medical College of Wisconsin's Global Health Week program. Screening will take place Thursday, December 5 at 2pm on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus. Film will be followed by a discussion moderated by CDC's Dr. Martin Cetron. Open to the public. Throughout November we've celebrated four television broadcasts on Twin Cities Public Television, and we've received some really wonderful feedback from viewers. Moreover, our premiere broadcast on TPT’s flagship station, tpt 2, attracted 13,000 viewership households -- not too shabby! But we're not done yet... for our Minnesota friends, you still have a few chances to catch American Heart on TV.  How about an alternative to football on Thanksgiving? American Heart will play multiple times throughout the day. The University of Minnesota School of Public Health launched an engaging and innovative way to educate the general public and potential public health students about the essential work performed by public health professionals. 

The game simulates actual tasks performed by a team of public health professionals during an epidemic. Each player chooses a role and then works with other players to identify the cause of the epidemic and contain its spread. As the epidemic progresses, players collaborate to make decisions and overcome real-world challenges.
Epidemic! provides a compelling and effective way to:

• Engage people in exploring the field of public health.
• Immerse players in a public health role during a realistic public health emergency.
• Illustrate tasks and functions performed by various public health professionals.
• Demonstrate the importance of collaboration among public health professionals.

There are a few modifications which are highlighted on the website:

• Latin American and Caribbean refugees are now included, in addition to Asian, Middle Eastern, and African refugees.
• Recommendations for management of Strongyloides in refugees from Loa loa-endemic areas emphasize a screen-and-treat approach and de-emphasize a presumptive high-dose albendazole approach.
• Presumptive use of albendazole during any trimester of pregnancy is no longer recommended.

Documentary; A River Changes Course

INVITATION...

You are invited to attend our new Global One Health Incubator to advance collaboration across University of Minnesota to address challenges arising at the intersection of animals-humans and the environment around the world.  The goal of this meeting will be to host compelling discussions around pertinent topics, identify interesting upcoming funding opportunities, and foster new programs and projects across the university.  This will be a casual get-together generally held on the first Friday of the month. (The exception being this month which will be held on Friday, November 8 due to location availability).  This activity is an alignment of a number of other One Health groups across the University including:  Pathogens and Populations brown bag lunch, One Health Research Update Meetings and the Global One Health Happy Hour.

This month’s topic:  Global One Health Incubator: How can we best use this activity to foster collaboration and advance One Health work across the University.
