Week 3 Chiang Mai Update
Photo 1 : Koh Kut
Apologies for the late update. Had a long weekend, and on Monday evening went out for Loy Krathong Day, which is quite the event in Chiang Mai.
Cardiology rotation
Last week started on the cardiology rotation, primarily
working with Dr. Narawut, an electro-physiologist. He’s apt to run up many
flights of stairs and on the spectrum of dyskinesia during rounds; a
hyper-mobile individual. And he loves to teach. He especially enjoys teaching
the physical exam, pointing out pulsus paradoxus, a bi-directional femoral
artery bruit of aortic stenosis, water-hammer pulse with arm-raise maneuver,
and the "dark arts" (as he calls it) of cardiac auscultation.
In addition to rounding, I've spent one day in heart-failure
clinic and observing the fellows doing echocardiograms, which aren't done by
echo techs here.

“Free Time is Happy Time” (quote from hematology
fellow)
I did have the good fortune of a long weekend as well and
spent it on the sunny, white-sanded, less-touristed island of Koh Kut. It was
amazing. Blue skies, empty waterfall swimming holes, crystal clear water, great
coral snorkeling grounds, and delicious seafood. An island I would certainly
visit again.
Loy Krathong
Chiang Mai was bustling with lights, candles, and crowds
around temples for Loy Krathong on my return. I walked through the town to
watch the activities on the full moon night, listened to chanting at Wat
Pantao, lit a large ceramic lamp, and then made my way to the Ping River where
lanterns were taking flight.
